One Year Since Voyager

Hello all!

It’s been a year this weekend since I went into the studio to start recording the Voyager album. Although it hasn’t been a year since the release, this is really the anniversary of the music’s conception.

A very special thanks goes out to all of the musicians involved: Sam Leslie, Matthew Davis, Vince Ilagan, Avery Merritt, Julian Pinelli, Adam Steffey, and Wyatt Rice. Another big thanks to Ben Bateson for the recording (and photography), Nicholas Davis for mastering, and Grace Van’t Hof for the artwork and design.

The album is currently available here on my website, as well as digitally through iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, etc. It’d mean the world if you gave it a listen.

Happy sailing,

Banjo Ben Lesson

Hello all! I recently had the pleasure of recording an online lesson with Banjo Ben Clark. In the lesson we look at a technique I use pretty often, called a scrape. While I certainly don’t take credit for this, it is a big part of my playing. You can check out the lesson here:

Hello all!

I’m thrilled to announce the release of my first full-length album, “Voyager” out August 31!  This album has been almost a year in the making, and features some of my best friends, heroes, and overall favorite people to make music with.  I’m joined by Matthew Davis on banjo, Sam Leslie on guitar, Vince Ilagan on bass, and Avery Merritt on fiddle, as well as special guests Adam Steffey, Wyatt Rice, and Julian Pinelli.

The project will be officially out and available on all digital music and streaming services on August 31 – until then, you can check out the project and place a preorder, receiving 3 instant song downloads, here: https://thomascassell.bandcamp.com/album/voyager.  You can also place a preorder for the physical CD, expected as soon as a week before the official release date.

Things That Are Overall Not That Interesting

A few things coming up with Circus No. 9, the Bryan Sutton Band, Will Cassell, and Tellico.  Despite the title, these are exciting to me -- I hope it's the same for you.

July 12-21 / Circus No. 9 Summer Tour Vol. 2
Headed out this Thursday (6/12) for the second portion of Circus No. 9's summer tour.  On this run we'll be hitting Lynchburg in VA, State College and Carlisle in PA, Frankfort IL, Knoxville and Nashville in TN.  Check the dates at circusnumbernine.com.  Gonna be a hot one (both musically and atmospherically).

Aug 4 / Tellico in Verona, VA
I'll be filling in on mandolin with the great Asheville band Tellico, at their Verona, VA show at the Oak Grove Theater.  Tickets can be purchased here:  https://oakgrovefestival.com/.  You can also check out Tellico's music here:  https://tellicoband.com/listen

Aug 11 / Will Cassell Band in St. Paul, VA
Hometown gig with my own brother.  Should be a fun (and hot, but mostly fun) one!  Free outdoor festival, you can read about it here:  ttps://www.sugarhillbrewing.com/event/2018/8/11/street-festival

Aug 18 / Bryan Sutton Band in Pomeroy, OH
This one is exciting.  I'll be filling in with the Bryan Sutton Band at Jorma Kaukonen's ranch in Ohio.  This one is sold out, but if you were lucky enough to grab a ticket, and also somehow stumbled onto my website, I'll see you there.

Aug 25 / Circus No. 9 in Charlotte, NC
Circus No. 9 is back in tour mode at the U.S. Whitewater Center in Charlotte.

That's all the news we have today.  Back to your regular programming.
